Poor Elderly Woman is Rejected in Business Class Until a Photo of a Little Boy Falls Out of Her Purse – Story of the Day

An elderly woman decided to fly Business Class to be closer to her son. But the passengers on board rejected her until they discovered her true identity.
Rhea felt uneasy. That morning, the elderly woman had boarded the first plane leaving the airport and took a seat in Business Class, where wealthy people usually sat.
No one gave her a second glance as she entered the cabin, but once she had found her seat and settled in, all eyes were on her. The reason was simple: she stood out like a sore thumb.
While the other men and women wore chic and expensive-looking clothes, Rhea was dressed in her old, worn garments—her best, but dull compared to what the others were wearing.
The man next to her was engrossed in his newspaper when she sat down, so he didn’t notice her immediately. When he put down the paper, he glanced at her and recoiled in shock, then signaled a flight attendant.
“What is this?” he asked, pointing at Rhea.
The flight attendant looked somewhat embarrassed by the man’s tone, but after checking the woman’s seat number, she responded, “This passenger has a seat according to her paid ticket.”
The man looked as if he might vomit at any moment due to Rhea’s presence. Before speaking, he unfolded a pristine handkerchief and held it to his nose. Then he said, “I don’t know what’s on her ticket, but I bought a Business Class seat to avoid people like her, and now it feels like I’m sitting in a cheap alley with a homeless person.”
The commotion drew the attention of many in the cabin, and some seemed to support the arrogant man. A plump woman, heavily adorned with jewelry, spoke up.
“If I wanted to fly with such riffraff, I would have bought an Economy Class ticket,” she said, and a murmur of agreement spread through the rows of passengers.
The murmur quickly escalated into a dispute, which the flight attendant tried to suppress, but the wealthy passengers wanted nothing of it—the woman had to go.
“Don’t you see she doesn’t belong here?” said one man.
“Has this airline sunk so low? How can such a person afford the fare?” asked another.
“We want her removed and we want a formal apology for being exposed to such filth,” said the man next to Rhea.
He and a few other passengers stood up, refusing to sit until they got what they wanted. Rhea sat there, listening to their arguments and enduring the humiliation.
“I’m fine, this will pass,” she repeated like a mantra.
Still, she could hear them talking about her, and it deeply hurt her that people could be so cruel. Before she knew it, tears were streaming down her slightly wrinkled cheeks.
“Maybe I should just leave,” Rhea thought and began to gather her things with trembling hands.
As she stood up to leave, she stumbled, and instead of catching her as instinct would dictate, the man next to her stepped back as if to avoid being splashed with mud.
Rhea fell to her knees and accidentally spilled the contents of her handbag. With trembling hands, she began to collect her belongings, knowing that everyone in the cabin was now watching her.
An elegantly dressed older lady, who had been peacefully sleeping until woken by the commotion, got down on her knees to help Rhea.
The cabin fell silent as the passengers stared in disbelief at how one of their own was treating Rhea like a human being. The first thing the woman picked up was a photograph of a small boy.
“Thank you,” Rhea whispered as she took it from her.
“That’s my son,” she said with a tearful smile, still on her knees. “He’s the pilot of this plane.”
“He must have grown into a fine young man,” said the wealthy older woman.
“I don’t know. I had to give him up for adoption when he was just five years old because I couldn’t afford to care for him.” As she spoke, tears streamed from her eyes, and the cabin remained silent.
“I searched for him for years but couldn’t find him. Recently, I learned he had become a pilot, so I started traveling from airport to airport trying to find him. Today I found him, but the only way I could get close was by taking this flight.”
Rhea looked at the onlookers, most of whom were now shamefully looking away, and continued.
“I’m sorry you’re all uncomfortable, but I wanted to be as close to my son as possible, so I saved my money to get this chance. Business Class is closer to him, and I’ve never flown before, so I thought it would be a great birthday gift for me.”
The passengers listened to her story, and when she finished, many were in tears. Rhea eventually got up and went to the flight attendants, eager to finally meet her son.
“What if he doesn’t want to see me?” she asked, resisting their urging. “What if he hates me for abandoning him?” Before the flight attendant could respond, the man who had objected to her sitting next to him spoke up.
“You had no choice, I believe he will understand,” he said before quickly returning to his newspaper. He too was ashamed. Rhea went with the flight attendant to finally meet her son.
After a while, a male voice came over the plane’s intercom. “This is the captain speaking… On this flight is a special person—my mother—and today is her birthday.”
Everyone applauded the elderly lady, and those who had mocked her earlier apologized for their mistake. When the plane landed, the pilot, whose name was Joseph, met his mother, and finally, after many years of estrangement, Rhea held her son in her arms again.
What can we learn from this story?
Choose to be kind. When the man next to Rhea started demanding her removal, others joined in, and though the woman had done nothing wrong, they eventually succeeded in having her removed. The only person who did not join in was another elderly woman. She stood up for Rhea, even though she could have easily sided with the arrogant passengers, and her decision changed everything.
Never give up. Rhea searched for her son for years but couldn’t find him, yet that didn’t stop her. She continued her search and was willing to do whatever it took to meet him, even saving her hard-earned money for an expensive Business Class flight. Her persistence and sacrifice were ultimately rewarded, and she was able to meet him.
