87-Year-Old Man Returns Home from Hospital and Finds His Belongings Removed from the House – Story of the Day

When Chris Haak was admitted to the hospital, his daughter sent her son Peter to check on him and ensure the house was ready for his return. But Peter and his wife had different plans. Chris returned to find his dilapidated house and then heard something shocking from his grandson.

“Dad, don’t worry. I’ll figure something out. But I can’t visit you because I’m out of paid leave at work,” Angelina told her father, 87-year-old Chris Haak, when he called her from the hospital.

He had called 911 after a heart attack, fearing it could be serious. However, the doctors said they needed to run more tests and check several things before he could return home. He called his daughter, who lived in Hamburg, asking if she could come home to Munich to help him.

But she couldn’t. “Okay, sweetheart. I guess the doctors are just concerned about my health at my age, and they’ll tell me more soon enough,” he mumbled, holding his phone to his ear while lying in his hospital bed.

“Hanna, calm down. It’s okay. It just throws our plans off a bit,” he reassured her. Plans?

Finally, they hung up, and the doctors asked Chris to stay in the hospital for a few more days while they checked everything and decided what treatment he needed.

“You need to go to Munich and check on your grandfather. He’s all alone,” Angelina insisted to her son Peter.

“I don’t know if I can do that, Mom,” he replied. They were speaking on the phone, and Angelina wouldn’t take no for an answer.

“Peter, you have to be there for your grandfather. Who knows how much longer he’ll live, especially if his heart is starting to fail? And you’re his only grandchild, don’t forget that,” Angelina tried to convince him. “He always said you would inherit his house and belongings when he dies. Maybe you should check the house and see what repairs are needed so he can live comfortably for as long as possible. And it’s also a great time to bond with him.”

Peter was silent for a moment, and his mother thought he might have hung up. But he finally answered in a strange tone. “Ok, ok. I’ll go. Hanna will come with me. I think I can ask for some time off since I haven’t taken a vacation in a while.”

“Good. Thank you, my son. My job wouldn’t allow it, but I trust you’ll help your grandfather as much as you can. I love you, honey,” she continued, relieved that her father wouldn’t be alone after being discharged from the hospital.

“I love you too, Mom. Bye.”

Unfortunately, Angelina had no idea what her son really thought.

A few days passed, and the doctors finally prescribed Chris several medications after reviewing his test results. They discharged him from the hospital and warned him not to strain himself, as he needed to take care of his health even after improving.

Chris nodded at all their explanations, but he didn’t pay much attention. He was worried because Angelina hadn’t called the day before, and she had told him that Peter would come to stay with him.

He didn’t have his grandson’s phone number, but he hoped to see him at the house. So he took a taxi from the hospital to his home.

He was surprised to discover some furniture in his front yard and recognized it as his own. Additionally, his door was slightly ajar, but he remembered that the paramedics who took him to the hospital had closed it completely. What happened? But the most shocking thing happened when he entered.

The entire house was empty. The paintings on his walls, his military memorabilia, his cabinet, the kitchen table, and chairs—everything he didn’t see outside was gone. In some places, several plastic sheets were spread out, as if someone was painting or doing some construction work on the house.

“Hello?” he called out into the completely empty room and heard footsteps from the hallway where the bedrooms were.

“Grandpa?” Peter asked, confused when he saw him. But Chris didn’t pay attention to his reaction. He breathed a sigh of relief.

“Peter! Oh, thank goodness! I thought someone had broken in and taken everything I owned. What’s going on here, my dear boy?” he asked his grandson, approaching him for a firm and masculine hug.

“Oh, good. Yeah. No one broke in,” Peter muttered, pursing his lips, but he returned the hug.

Finally, Chris noticed that he was acting strange. “What’s going on?”

“Well, we wanted to surprise you,” he began.

“We?”

“Yes, Hanna and I. She’s here,” Peter revealed, turning to the hallway to call his wife. “Honey!”

“What?” she came out, her eyes widening when she saw Chris. “Um, Mr. Haak. Good day.”

“Hello, dear! It’s so good to see you. I haven’t seen you since the wedding,” Chris smiled at his grandson’s wife and kissed her cheek. “So, tell me, what’s going on with my house?”

Peter and Hanna exchanged a strange, quick glance, but Peter answered first. “We wanted to remodel it before you left the hospital. It needed some care, and we hoped it would make you feel better. But you got out sooner than we expected.”

Chris smiled broadly at the two young people in his living room, thinking about how thoughtful they were. “That’s wonderful! Although I hope you’re not spending too much money.”

“Oh, no, no. Don’t worry. I know a guy,” Hanna chimed in, shoving her hands into her pockets. Her grin was awkward, but the older man didn’t notice.

“Cool. What about my stuff? Where is it?”

“It’s currently…uh…in storage, except for a few things we want to replace as a gift. Those are outside waiting to be picked up by the garbage men. We had to put them there for the renovation,” Peter explained with a strange pause. “But the bedrooms still have everything. Don’t worry. We’ll sleep well at night.”

“Thank you! Thank you so much, my boy. You’re amazing!” Chris said, hugging them both at the same time. He was thrilled to see his family again and realized how much they cared that they did something so thoughtful. “Now listen. I need to fill a few prescriptions, but I’ll be back soon.”

“Sure!” Peter and Hanna said in unison, giggling awkwardly.

Chris frowned at them for a moment but didn’t think much about their behavior. He walked to the local pharmacy, which was within walking distance.

When he returned a few minutes later, he didn’t see Peter or Hanna in the living room. He heard their voices coming from Angelina’s old bedroom and approached them to ask what they wanted for dinner. But something Hanna said made him stop.

“What are we going to do, you idiot?” she insulted her husband, and Chris had never heard her speak to him like that.

“Hanna, calm down. It’s okay. It just throws our plans off a bit,” Peter reassured her. Plans?

“A bit? A bit? You told me he was dying and this would be our house. That’s why we’re spending all this money on this house when we’re still renting!” Hanna asked almost mockingly.

Chris’ eyes widened, and his hand flew to his mouth so no sound could escape. He wanted to hear the rest of the conversation.

“Hanna, it’s okay. This house will belong to me one day, and he’s saved a ton of money. Just think of it as an investment,” Peter assured her, his voice dripping with frustration.

But Hanna was downright furious. “NO! We’re not spending another cent, and I don’t care about him! Tomorrow, we’re getting on a plane and flying home! This was a waste of time!”

“We can’t just leave this house like this!”

“YES, WE CAN, AND WE WILL! That’s final!” she yelled at Peter, and Chris had finally had enough. He walked back to the front door and pretended to have just come back from the pharmacy.

“I wanted to thank them for all the work they did on my house… because I’ll be enjoying it for the rest of my life.”
He called out to them, and they both acted like everything was fine. They talked about what to make for dinner and were perfectly pleasant around Chris. But now he knew the truth, and it was time to teach them a harsh lesson.

They ate spaghetti and meatballs, one of Peter’s favorite dishes, on the empty living room floor, and Chris finally cleared his throat to speak.

“Peter, I wanted to talk to you about something important,” he began, noticing Peter and Hanna perked up for some reason. “I’ve been thinking about moving to a retirement home permanently. I don’t want another emergency to happen while I’m alone here. I think it’s the right choice, and I think you two should have the house.”

Peter and Hanna’s jaws dropped, and they looked at each other, delighted. “Are you serious?” his grandson asked, visibly excited.

“Yes, I’m serious.”

“Thank you, Grandpa! This is an honor! We’re going to make this house look so good!” Peter finally said, and Hanna echoed his gratitude.

Over the next few weeks, Peter and Hanna renovated the house as best they could. They actually kept a few things that belonged to Chris, but they got rid of some old stuff, and he pretended that was okay. But it wasn’t.

Finally, the house was ready, and Chris suggested throwing a housewarming party. He told Peter and Hanna that he would soon be moving to the retirement home and they should prepare to live there permanently.

They were excited and decided to invite a few friends who had flown in from Hamburg to Munich. For a while, Chris smiled and greeted Peter’s friends, but eventually, he was done playing nice. It was time for revenge.

“Friends! Gather around! My grandson and his wife have done an amazing job on this house, and they’re the best. They will live here permanently now!” he began, raising his arms to gather attention.

But Peter and Hanna frowned, especially when they saw his smile drop and his expression turn cold.

“They deserve this house after working so hard for it…But they will never get it. You have one week to leave, or I’ll get you out myself,” Chris finished, his face almost malicious. His words made Peter and Hanna gasp in shock, and they couldn’t respond.

“You think you can betray me and inherit my house after all I’ve done for you, Peter? You’re nothing but a stupid boy, and you fell for my trick. Get out of my house!” he shouted.

Everyone stared at Chris, Peter, and Hanna, and a heavy silence lingered in the room. Finally, Peter and Hanna gathered their belongings and left. Their friends followed them quickly, too.

Chris had a lot of work to do to undo what they had done to his house, but he called some people from church and invited them over. They agreed to help him without any trouble.

Eventually, his home was exactly as he wanted, and he decided that the best thing was to donate it to the church or another deserving person after his death. His greedy grandson wouldn’t get a cent from him, but he hoped Peter would become a better man in the future.

This is a sad ending to a relationship that could’ve been beautiful, but it shows the power of gratitude and the consequences of greed.

What can we learn from this story?

Gratitude means everything: Chris was thrilled at the idea of Peter and Hanna helping him, but it was all for nothing when he discovered their true intentions. If they had simply cared for him, they would have earned his inheritance, but greed ruined everything.

Pretending is not an option: Chris saw right through Peter and Hanna’s false pretense and taught them a lesson they would never forget. It’s always better to be upfront and honest.

Karma hits hard: Peter and Hanna got their just desserts in the end after trying to fool Chris, and it happened right when they thought they were getting away with everything.
