My husband earns 320,000 PHP per month, but he gives all of it to his family.

My husband’s salary was 320,000 PHP per month, but he gave all of that to his family.
I asked him only one question: “Can’t you save a little bit of your salary for our family?”
He sneered sarcastically: “It’s my money. I’m the one who worked hard for it, so you don’t have the right to mess with it!”
Fine. I had no right, did I?
The next day, I calmly signed the contract for a six-month business trip to the United States offered by my company.
I left without leaving a single centavo, and I didn’t leave a single word behind either.
Three days later, he called 78 times and sent 96 text messages.
I just smiled, and I only answered him in four words.
01
The phone was shaking on the table. The call was coming from my husband.
I stared at the screen.
A message on Viber.
It came from my brother-in-law, Ben, who had never even called me “Ate” once.
“Bro, save me from this mess. 2.4 million pesos.”
There was even an icon of a man kneeling and begging.
My husband put his phone face down on the table, grabbed his spoon and fork, took some food, and didn’t even blink.
“What happened to your brother?” I asked.
“What’s the big deal?” he replied calmly.
“2.4 million pesos is not a small amount,” I said.
“He wants to partner in a small business with his friend. He needs the capital.”
I almost laughed.
Ben was twenty-six years old and changed jobs faster than he changed clothes. His biggest hobby was going to Okada to “inspect projects.” What he called a “small business” was just his gambling.
“We don’t have that much cash,” I told him the truth. I knew exactly how much money moved around in this house.
“Don’t you have more than 100,000 PHP from your mid-year bonus? I’m just going to add a little bit more. Let’s give it to him first.”
“Where is your money?” I looked straight at him. “Where is your salary from last month? It’s 320,000 PHP, but I’ve never seen a single peso brought home here.”
Sean dropped his bowl of soup, his face turning cold.
“I gave it to my mother. Her health is not good, doesn’t she need to spend? My brother is unemployed, doesn’t he need an allowance?”
“So that’s why the 320,000 PHP you earn every month is given entirely to your family, without deducting a single centavo for us.”
“Is there a problem with that?” He raised his eyebrows and looked at me contemptuously. “That’s my money. I worked hard to earn it.”
I took a deep breath to hold back the anger in my heart.
“Sean, we are married.”
“In this house, I pay the loan amortization, I pay the electricity, water, and association dues, and I also buy our daily necessities.”
“You’re a member of this household. Shouldn’t you set aside at least a little of your salary for our own family?”
This was the first time I had spoken so straightforwardly.
Over the past three years, I had always thought that he would eventually understand me too. I thought marriage was a responsibility that both people had to bear.
But it was only now that I realized I was wrong.
Sean grinned sarcastically, the sound of his laughter like an ice needle piercing my ear.
“Daria, please wake yourself up.”
“I make money because I have the ability. How I spend it is my strategy. Giving it to my mother and my brother is a sign of my love and gratitude to my family.”
He leaned over a little toward me, and every word he said felt like a slap in the face.
“You have no right to interfere with me!”
“You only earn coins every month. After you pay for the house, do you even have anything left? And now you want to mess with how I spend my 320,000 PHP salary? Don’t you think you sound ridiculous?”
Both of my hands trembled under the table.
“Fine.”
I said only one word.
Suddenly, silence fell over the room.
Sean looked surprised by my reaction. He probably expected me to lose control or get into a big fight with him.
But I didn’t.
I calmly stood up and picked up my phone from the table.
“I’m full.”
I turned around and went into my study room, slamming the door shut.
Behind me, I heard Sean’s dismissive laughter.
I opened my laptop, and there was an unread email on the screen.
From: HR Director of the company. Subject: [Personnel Confirmation for Project Team Assignment to the US Branch]
I opened the email, and it came with an attached contract for an overseas business trip.
The assignment would last six months, my salary would double, I would have a free private apartment, and all expenses would be covered by the company.
This was the opportunity my boss had discussed with me last week, saying I should think it over first. At that time, I said I needed to talk about it with my family first.
But now, there was no need.
I picked up my phone and called the HR Director.
“Sir William, this is Daria.”
“Have you thought it through?” asked a cheerful voice on the other end of the line.
“Yes, sir. I’ve thought about it.”
“I’m going to sign the contract now. When do you need me?”
“As soon as possible! The project team there is already in a rush. Can you fly out right away?”
“Anytime.”
As soon as the call ended, I connected my laptop to the printer to print the contract.
The faint sound of paper sliding out of the printer filled the room.
I grabbed my pen, and in the signature space on the last page, I wrote my name.
Daria.
Every stroke of the pen was clear and firm.
After signing, I scanned the contract, locked it with a password, and emailed it back to the HR department.
When everything was done, I leaned back in my chair and let out a deep sigh.
It was dark outside the window.
But in my heart, everything felt so clear and peaceful.
Rights, right?
You’ll quickly find out who is actually entitled to them, and who is about to lose them.
02
The next morning, I woke up at my usual time.
Sean was still asleep. Last night he had probably talked to his mother and brother until midnight again, planning how to “take” the remaining 200,000 PHP from me.
I didn’t wake him up.
I walked into the walk-in closet and pulled out the largest suitcase.
My every move was slow and careful.
I packed only a few pieces of clothing, personal items, along with my laptop and some important personal documents.
In his section of the closet, expensive clothes and branded accessories hung. Some of them still had the tags attached.
He had bought all of that with what he called “his own hard-earned money.”
Meanwhile, the 120-square-meter condominium we lived in had been secured using my savings from before we got married for the down payment, and the monthly amortization came directly from my salary.
I looked at those things, but I no longer felt any emotion.
After packing, I placed the suitcase behind the door, in a place that wasn’t too conspicuous.
Then I walked over to my study room.
I opened the safe. Inside were the land title, the certificate of registration for the house, my diplomas, and some emergency cash.
I grabbed all the documents that belonged to me and put them in my bag.
The rest of the cash inside, I didn’t even bother to count; I took all of it too.
In the end, the only thing left inside the safe was the red marriage contract.
I closed the safe without changing the password. But its interior was completely empty.
I put my bag next to the suitcase.
By the time I finished all of this, it was still early dawn.
I sat on the couch in the living room without turning on the lights.
The whole house was completely quiet.
I could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator and Sean’s deep breathing coming from the bedroom.
We had been married for three years, and only now did I look at this place we called “home” through the eyes of a stranger.
Our wedding photo was still hanging on the wall.
In the picture, he was smiling so sweetly while holding me, and I looked incredibly happy too.
At the time, I truly believed we were going to be each other’s anchors for the rest of our lives.
But now, it all seemed like an illusion.
His anchor had never been me. It had always been his family—his brother acting like an endless well that could never be filled.
And I? I was just a tool for him to maintain his fake pride, and a tool to keep his family supported.
A tool that had no right to interfere with how he spent his money.
Suddenly, my phone screen lit up.
A message from the company’s Admin Department:
“Dear Daria, your flight has been booked. It will be at 2:00 PM at Terminal 3 of NAIA. Have a safe flight, Ma’am.”
I replied with two words:
“Received, thanks.”
Sean woke up at nine o’clock in the morning.
When he saw me sitting in the living room, he was a little surprised.
“Aren’t you going to work today?”
“I took a leave.”
“Ah,” he didn’t ask anything more and went straight to the bathroom. “It’s good that you’re free today, let’s go to the bank to withdraw your mid-year bonus.”
I just stared at him blankly.
He seemed to feel unsettled by my stare, and his hand holding the electric shaver stopped.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“My brother is in a hurry for the money, we can’t put it off.”
“I can’t do that,” I answered.
“Didn’t you just say you took a leave today?” He raised his voice.
“I have somewhere else to go.”
“What could possibly be more important than my brother’s urgent matter?”
He had completely lost his patience.
03
I took a deep breath, stood up, and looked straight into his eyes.
“There are some things in life that are more important than your family, Sean. Now, it’s time for me to put myself first.”
“What are you talking about?!” he yelled, still holding his shaver, a trace of anger washing over his face. “Are you crazy, Daria? I’m just asking for your bonus, it’s for my brother’s future!”
I didn’t answer him. I walked to the door, grabbed my bag, and pulled out the suitcase. As soon as he saw the large suitcase, Sean suddenly froze. His eyes widened.
“Where are you going with that?!”
“I’m going on a business trip to the US. For six months,” I said calmly as I opened the door.
He laughed sarcastically, his voice full of arrogance. “The US? Do you think you can scare me by going abroad? Alright, go! Let’s see how someone like you can survive on pocket change without me! But leave Ben’s money before you walk out!”
I looked at him for the very last time, a smile playing on my lips.
“Sean, remember what you said last night. Your money is your money. Likewise, my money is my money. Since I don’t have the right to mess with your 320,000 PHP salary, you don’t have the right to touch even a single centavo of my bonus.”
“And besides,” I looked around the condo, “the amortization of this house for this month has already been settled by me. Starting next month, however, it will be all up to you. The electricity, water, internet, and association dues… all of these are under my name, and I am cutting them off tomorrow. Have fun with your own money.”
Before he could scream and chase after me, I slammed the door shut. I left the building, booked a Grab, and went straight to NAIA Terminal 3. With every meter the car drove away, I felt my soul gradually being freed from the hell I had endured for three years.
04
Three days later, in a modern apartment in New York, USA.
I had just finished my first major meeting at the US branch. Because of our team’s excellent performance, the executives praised me personally. When I got back to my desk, I picked up my phone, which had been on silent mode for three days.
When the screen lit up, my phone almost crashed from the sheer volume of notifications.
78 missed calls. 96 unread messages on Viber.
They all came from the exact same person: Sean.
I opened the messages, and that was when I watched his world slowly crumble, shifting from anger to complete desperation:
[Day 1 – 2:00 PM]: Daria! Where are you?! Why is your bank account unavailable? Why can’t I get in touch with you?! Ben is waiting at Okada, he needs the money to settle down! [Day 1 – 8:00 PM]: Daria! Are you really gone?! Do you think what you’re doing is a joke? Come back here! How am I supposed to eat? There’s no food in the fridge, and your safe is empty! Where are the house titles?! [Day 2 – 10:00 AM]: Daria, answer me! Mom called, her chest hurts because she found out you weren’t going to give Ben the money. We need 50,000 PHP for the hospital right now! Transfer the money! [Day 2 – 7:00 PM]: Why are the electricity and water cut off?! It’s completely dark in the condo. How could you leave me like this?! Are you really my wife?! [Day 3 – 8:00 AM]: Daria… Please, answer. The bank texted. If the condo’s amortization is not paid this month, there will be a penalty. I don’t have any money left, I gave it all to my mom last week… [Last message – 5 minutes ago]: It’s over… Ben was beaten up by people at Okada because he couldn’t pay his debt. Mom is furious with me, and we were kicked out of the hospital because I didn’t have cash on hand… Daria, where are you? Have some mercy, please help me. I know I have no right… please, answer my call.I stared at the screen. Not a single tear came out of my eyes, only a wide, bitter smile.
I thought about the three years during which I enabled him to live a luxurious life while I bore all the financial hardships, all while he gave me nothing but contempt and disrespect.
I clicked the reply box and typed four words with absolute coldness in my heart:
“Who are you again?”
After sending it, I completely blocked his number and turned off the phone. Outside the window, the lights of New York were shining brightly—a brand new beginning with no room for people who knew nothing but how to leech off others and show contempt.
05
A month passed quickly in New York. Because of my dedication, the company formally appointed me as the Permanent Project Manager at the U.S. branch. Every single day here was filled with appreciation—something I had never felt when I was with Sean.
One night, while I was having coffee at a local café, I received an email from my lawyer in the Philippines.
It was a copy of the Petition for Legal Separation and Property Dissolution that I had filed against Sean. Since it was easily proven that I was the one paying all the house amortizations and that the down payment came from my own premarital savings, the condo rights were temporarily withheld solely under my name.
The email included some photos of the condo we used to live in.
I smiled bitterly. The condo that had once been so clean and tidy now looked like an abandoned warehouse. There were red notices taped to the door—warnings from the bank and the building administration for non-payment of obligations.
According to my lawyer, Sean was forced to move into a tiny, old apartment with his mother and his brother Ben, who now had a crippled leg after being severely beaten by casino creditors. The 320,000 PHP monthly salary he used to boast about? Half of it was now automatically deducted by the bank to pay off his debts, and the rest was barely enough to cover his mother’s medication and their daily meals.
Gone were his expensive branded clothes. He had sold absolutely everything just to provide for his family, who acted like a bottomless well—never to be filled.
06
Five months after that, I returned to the Philippines for a week to arrange the final signing of the documents for the sale of the condo and the official closure of our marriage.
Sean and I met at my lawyer’s office.
I could scarcely recognize him. The man who had once been so handsome, always walking with his head held high and a contemptuous smirk on his face, now sat slumped in a corner, looking ten years older. His shirt was faded, and there was a heavy trace of exhaustion in his eyes.
When he saw me walk in—wearing a sharp suit, radiating self-confidence and elegance—his lips suddenly started to tremble.
“Daria…” His voice was hoarse and broken. “Daria, please forgive me… I was wrong. I’ve thought about everything. My family… they just used me as a cash cow. When the money ran out, my mom blamed me, and Ben just kept demanding money for his bets. You were the only one… You were the only one who truly cared about me.”
He stood up and tried to grab my hand, but I took a step back with a cold expression.
“I’m here to sign the papers, Sean, not to listen to your remorse,” I said calmly.
“Daria, please! Let’s start over! From now on, I’m going to give you my entire paycheck! All 320,000 PHP, I won’t keep a single centavo for myself! Just take me back, please!” As he pleaded, his tears finally overflowed, and he fell to his knees right in front of me, looking exactly like the begging icon his brother had sent him months ago.
I looked down at him from head to toe, feeling no anger, no hatred, but only pure pity and total indifference.
“Sean,” I said slowly, every word sounding like the final verdict of justice. “My current salary in the U.S. is more than triple yours. My own money is more than enough to give me a luxurious life, one that doesn’t require the help of any man.”
I grabbed the pen and quickly signed the last page of the agreement.
“When you told me I didn’t have the right to look into your money, I accepted it. And now, I want you to understand this: My life, my money, and my future… you don’t have the right to touch, or even peek at them.”
I put down the pen, picked up my luxury bag, and turned around without a single hint of hesitation.
Behind me, I heard the weak, desperate crying of a man who had thrown away real wealth all for the sake of false pride.
I walked out of the office, greeted by the bright, warm sunshine of Manila. I was finally free. The past was completely over, and my future was being written entirely in my own hands.
