Coach goes viral online for this one act during kids’ basketball game
In a world where teachers often go unnoticed, their impact remains unparalleled. They are the unsung heroes, dedicating their lives to imparting knowledge, inspiring, counseling, and mentoring future generations.
Jonathan Oliver, a physical education teacher at WG Nunn Elementary in Valdosta, Georgia, exemplifies this spirit of selflessness and care.
Recently, Oliver received recognition for a simple yet profound gesture towards one of his kindergarteners during a basketball game.
It was a heartwarming moment captured by Kandice Anderson, another elementary school teacher, and shared on YouTube. In the video, Oliver can be seen focused and determined as he helps a kindergartener, Kristen Paulk, put her hair back in a ponytail.
The viral video, titled “When your job goes beyond teaching!” caught the attention of Good Morning America, leading to an interview with the 34-year-old father of three.
Reflecting on the attention the video garnered, Oliver humbly stated, “It was shocking to me that it got that much attention because we all do it.” He added, “We [teachers] want to make them feel like they’re at home and that they enjoy being here. We try to love on them as much as possible. To me, it was just a ponytail.”
While Oliver is accustomed to helping his own daughter with her hair, he joked, “Anything else, I’d say, ‘You better ask your mom.’”
For Kristen’s mother, Miyah Cleckley, the video was deeply touching. She expressed her gratitude, saying, “I always know that Kristen is in very good hands with him. I thought it was really cute because her father, he does their hair a lot. We have five girls and one son so when I’m working he has to pick up the weight of doing their hair.”
Oliver’s act of kindness is just one among many stories of teachers going above and beyond for their students. They are, without a doubt, true heroes.
